We're a Ministry dedicated to supporting any child in New Zealand whose wellbeing is at significant risk of harm now, or in the future. We also work with young people who may have offended, or are likely to offend.
-
COVID-19
We continue to work with tamariki, whānau, caregivers and victims in all alert levels following safe health and hygiene practices, responding quickly where COVID-19 is suspected.
-
Vision and values
We’re on a journey to ensure all children are in loving whānau and communities where oranga tamariki can be realised.
-
How we work
We work to ensure that the voices of children and young people, whānau, hapū and iwi, alongside caregivers, Māori organisations and NGO partners, are heard as we co-design a new way of doing things.
-
Reviews and Inquiries
In May 2019, our attempt to bring a new-born pēpi Māori (Māori baby) into care attracted public scrutiny. This event led to several reviews and inquiries into the way we work, including the legislation we work under, our policies and practice.

Research
The Oranga Tamariki Evidence Centre works to build the evidence base that helps us better understand wellbeing and what works to improve outcomes for New Zealand’s children, young people and their whānau.
-
Careers
Our aim is that all tamariki are in loving whānau and communities where their ongoing wellbeing can be achieved. Working here, you'll be part of an organisation that’s committed to achieving transformational change for children in care.
