Darren Lee:

Kia ora everyone. My name’s Darren Lee I’m the General Manager for the National Contact Centre at Oranga Tamariki.

Welcome to the Contact Centre here in Tāmaki Makaurau.

We are the waharoa, the gateway into the organisation, providing a 24/7 service to receive any reports of concern about the safety and wellbeing of children.

We receive over 200,000 emails and phone calls per year.

We have about 160 employees here, 100 of whom are qualified and registered social workers.

If anyone does have any concerns about the safety and wellbeing of children, it’s our job to listen, to understand, to clarify what those concerns are, assess the risk, and then provide the appropriate support pathway for that particular child and their family.

In many instances we will ask a local social worker to provide that support to the child and family, but also quite often, particularly when the concerns are less urgent or less serious, community agencies or iwi services are far better placed to provide that support to the child and the family.

So, we’re able to put people in contact with those community and iwi services as well.

Either way, if you do have any concerns about the safety or wellbeing of a child, please call us on 0508 families (32645437) or email us at contact@ot.govt.nz, kia ora.
