Financial help for caregivers

Caregivers have told us that people who look after tamariki do it because they want to make a difference. Being a caregiver is voluntary, with financial help provided to meet the day-to-day expenses that looking after a tamaiti or rangatahi involves.

  • Caregiver allowance

A care allowance is paid fortnightly and covers board, personal items and pocket money. We also provide a 4-weekly kākahu allowance, and allowances for Christmas and birthday presents.

  • Reforming financial assistance and support for caregivers

In 2019, Oranga Tamariki carried out a review into the financial assistance provided to caregivers to make sure it meets the needs of children and caregivers.
