The Oranga Tamariki Ministerial Advisory Board was established in 2021 to provide the Minister for Children with advice and assurance on the operations and performance of Oranga Tamariki with tamariki, rangatahi, families, whānau, and Māori.

In July 2021, the Ministerial Advisory Board was asked to review the provision of care in Oranga Tamariki Care and Protection and Youth Justice Residences.
Following the release of Te Kahu Aroha in 2021, the Ministerial Advisory Board undertook to provide independent advice and assurance to the Minister for Children on the issues of disability within the care and protection system.
